The Brief
Following their move to a new building the client felt the new white walls were too clinical and wanted to create a warm and friendly space to welcome children and their families and inspire a relaxed feeling of ‘home from home’. The client had already seen the doodle distraction mural we had created for the LGI and wanted to replicate something similar in their treatment rooms with a Barnsley theme.
The Process
During our initial visit we spent time looking round the ward, taking in treatment rooms, main reception area, parents’ room and quiet room discussing themes and ideas. The client liked our proposal, so we made a second visit to conduct a full site survey and take measurements of the 11 walls required.
Our design is centred around a Welcome theme that children from all backgrounds and languages can understand. We’ve incorporated a warm friendly ‘Hello’ in different translations into the design with strong graphic elements and bright colour scheme.
This design flows from the ward entrance leading you down the main corridor with a giant sunshine feature wall at the far end of the ward. A subtle floral theme with butterflies is incorporated into the design for the Parent’s room and Quiet room to reflect the outside areas located nearby and give parents a calming ‘getaway space’ to reflect and rest.
Distraction murals were designed for the treatment rooms with Barnsley theme doodle graphics and landmarks. Easy clean, hardwearing materials were chosen for their suitability in a clinical setting with the final fitting completed over a couple of days.
The Result
This was a very rewarding project and such a pleasure to be let lose on a whole ward! Feedback from both staff and children and parents has been great and how much of a difference the new walls have made to the overall feeling of the ward. It really emphasises the power of wall art!
